Science

Intent

At Nunsthorpe we want to break cycles for our children, we want to give every child, every chance. Science at Nunsthorpe opens the door for curiosity, enquiry and wonder. Science empowers pupils with scientific vocabulary, helping them to make sense of the world in which they live. Science lessons allow children to work scientifically and connect their learning to real life experiences, making their learning more meaningful. We believe it is important for teachers to be confident in delivering relevant, practical and memorable science lessons. We want to make our children feel clever and develop a passion and love for Science. We want our children to say ‘Wow’ and ‘Why?’ because Science is constantly shaping our lives and is vital to The World’s future prosperity.

Implementation

We spend a lot of time immersing children in the language of their learning. We teach Science in blocks so that the children are taught discrete knowledge and skills which is also revisited in other subjects. Throughout the year, we implement the five types of enquiry to provide our children with a varied experience of learning. This includes lessons that focus on observations over time, comparative and fair testing, research, identifying and classifying and pattern seeking.

Year 4 – Living things and their habitats and animals including humans
1. Grouping and classifying
 food chains
2. Digestive system and teeth
Year 5 – Living things and their habitats and animals including humans
1. Life cycles and reproduction
2. Human development
Year 6 – Living things and their habitats
1. Classification

Living Things -. This term’s focus is Science and Geography , Here’s what is being covered in each year group

Year 1 – Plants
1. Common garden and wild plant
2. Basic structure

Year 2 – Plants and living things and their habitats.
1. Habitats
2. Food chains
3. Plant growth

Year 3 – Plants
1.Functions of parts and reproduction
2. Water transport

Science Drop Down Days

Year 2 had so much fun learning about what babies need to survive and how we change as we grow.
Whilst Year 6 were investigating the nutritional value of snacks.

Bulb Planting with Year 6

Year 6 were invited to plant daffodils in the church garden and planters ready to bloom in the spring by Rev Barlow. If you pass St Martin’s take a look and see if you can spot our plants starting to grow.

Forest School with Year 2

Year 2 spent the afternoon looking in the forest school area for microhabitats. The children enjoyed looking under logs and leaves, in the grass and in sheltered places. They then collected a variety of things to create their own microhabitats.

Year 6 Visit to the Zoo

Year 6 went to visit the Zoo to learn more about animals and their habitats as part of their Science Topic.

Year 4 Science Experiment

The children in 4R had great fun conducting an experiment to see how the digestive system works.

Little Nunsthorpe's Space Station

Lab rascals visited us to take us on a journey of our Solar System. We learned a little bit about each planet. We found out what stars are and how they are born.
Afterwards we made our own Space Station to play in.

Virtual Tours

Each week throughout Spring Term, we will be linking to live virtual tours of the world's greatest science Museums.

Big Questions

Each week throughout Spring Term, we will be asking some BIG scientific questions for you and your family to ponder.

Does the colour of food or drink affect whether we like them?

Test this by thinking about this the next time you eat or drink. If a food is a colour you don’t like, does this mean you don’t like the food? How could you test if this is true?

Does shoe design affect my jumping height?

Test this by jumping in different shoes. Try your trainers, a pair of boots, your bare feet or even your grownups shoes! Does it make a difference? Why?

What type of food allows mould to grow fastest?

Why not design an experiment to test out your ideas?
